I have been wanting to be part of a group for spiritual growth for last one year. I could not find anything in our area. Then I came across ServiceSpace and got to know about Wednesday meditation which touched me so much that I decided to start Wednesday meditation at our home. Thankfully my family was very supportive. They all rehearsed with me two days before the actual meditation session.

On July 18, 2012 we had our first Wednesday meditation with 15 people in Outer Banks, North Carolina. No one in my family is into meditation. All they know is that meditation is good for you. I am glad they all embraced the idea of Wednesday Meditation with an open mind. Many times when my husband, brother-in-law would sit for a meal, we would start discussing about Wednesday meditation. My husband went to his fitness class and told his instructor about it. My brother-in-law went for a hair cut and told the lady cutting his hair about it so overall we had 15 people in our first meditation. I remember how everyone in the family came home early for our first meditation to make sure everything was set right. It might be small thing for someone but we all were super excited about arranging the whole thing including the place to sit, cushions, dinner menu, smile cards etc.

This whole made me realize that "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear". For me that teacher was Service Space community. Everyone in ServiceSpace has been so loving and helpful. I sent them so many emails with my questions and always got prompt replies with love and concern. They really revive your sense to give and serve more. I am extremely thankful that I came across them.

Back to our Wednesday meditation. Most of people who came there were beginners and had not done meditation before. They were very scared of the whole idea of being in silence for 60 minutes. We are not at all used to siting in silence. It probably scares us in the beginning. My mother-in-law kept on insisting if we could play some background music during silent meditation :)

We started with talking about the whole thing, why meditate, how to meditate for first 15 minute then sat in silence for 30 minutes. For some people it was really hard. Everyone loved the part of circle of sharing where they all opened up and it was very joyful listening to everyone's stories. We could not follow all our rules for this first time. Since it was the first time, people didn't want to eat in silence which probably worked out well since everyone got to know each other better.

I am so happy that we could it and it went well. We have decided to do it first and third Wednesday of every month. Tonight is our second meditation.

Once again a big thanks to all the ServiceSpace members!
