On Monday, i had the privilege to read a story to my son's Kindergarten class called "The Kindness Quilt" about kids who engaged in acts of kindness, drew a picture of it then created a wall collage that looked like a quilt showing all of their gestures. After that, we sang a song I wrote that talks about colors, toys, friends, games, feelings, and hugs being for everyone.... the message is that nothing is specific to a boy or a girl, inclusion is important, and this truth is universal. On Tuesday, I was in the car listening to an interview with Pete Seeger and was not aware he had died. I was marveling at his amazing generativity in his 90's, his legacy, and the incredible power of song to change the world. I'd seen him interviewed a year ago and he was still so ALIVE that it didn't even occur to me that I was listening to a previously-taped interview. When the newscaster mentioned that he'd died the day before I was so touched, for that was when I had been singing with the kids, essentially about sexism. I felt such kinship with Pete Seeger and all others who have raised their voices in song to create awareness and then positive change. Singing with the children is one of the most beautiful ways I know of to plant seeds for what will grow next. "If we are to teach real peace in this world, we shall have to begin with the children."
