Wanted to share a beautiful thank you card that a recent Kindness Contest winner shared with Service Space:) Her idea: I've had this idea for 35 years, ever since I worked in Highland Park IL for the Volunteer Pool as a young woman. I love stories, especially the stories old folks tell. I would love to gather a team of people who are good listeners and decent writers to visit and listen the folks in nursing homes. I did a lot of volunteer work in those homes, bringing my kids' choir back in the 80's and then as a young mom bringing my own kids to visit. I did an "adopt a grandma/pa that went really well. These folks have had long full lives. They look out every day for someone to listen but most days are the same. If someone wrote down their wonderful stories, it would be an amazing gift for the family. If they are alone, they could share it with their friends -- their own life story in print. The expense would be only the cost of printing and making copies and perhaps a nice graphic designed print on the cover. If folks would want to do this we could even make buttons "Volunteer Biographer."
