"Wealthy Is Healthy", Is What I ...
"Wealthy is healthy", is what I overheard on NPR this afternoon. It was Tom (didn't catch his last name) and he's the president of some energy organization. He was arguing to why we should continue to burn coal and against curtailing our use of fossil fuels. His defense was basically, in parts of India women are burning cow patties as fuel, which is dirtier than our burning of coal, so why should we change? Really...that's what he has to offer? I cannot seem to wrap my head around this kind of reasoning. And, I am so bothered by his quote of "wealthy is healthy". Is that the prevailing attitude of our world, in general?

Cow patties are relevant only when considering coal to be dirty and he should have instead discussed the mature ways in which coal can be made cleaner including those which can be cost competitive--and without subsidies funded via taxation. He also could have discussed that the US government, in particular, is fond of adjusting costs to make "renewables" appear cost competitive. He should have been more transparent than the government. Perhaps he needs the practice.
