A Minute's Pause Ripples

In giving, we get back. As I teach, I learn from my students. In adopting the practice of a minute's pause before class, I have learned how it ripples forward as students send back their reflections. In reading the following one from one of them, I learned, how I can add a minute's pause to getting out of my car, to set my agenda for the day, and get more done.

"I have learned so much from this class that I can take back to my work and personal life. I really enjoyed the silent reflection in the beginning so that you can focus on what it is you want to accomplish. I take that to work with me. Before I even get out of my car, I take a moment to self-reflect on what it is that I need to work on and accomplish for the day. It seems to really help. I walk into work with a determination of what it is that I need to focus on for the day; and once that item is done then I can fill in my day with other items that pop up."

I am easily distracted with multiple demands on me, and am glad to try this as a way to focus my work day. What a counter-intuitive idea: pause and slow down to get more done. Ripples rock.

Another student described passing on the ripple:
" My favorite lesson during the course is the daily self-reflection. It's continued to allow me to be more present than ever in daily conversations no matter how repetitive some of those conversations may be. I've even spoken to my fiance about how much this has benefited me and she's begun to implement a minute of silent preparation in her law practice."
