Yesterday, I rode by a store in Berkeley that caught my eye since it said "Tibetan Aid Project." Later, as I contemplated my unique act of kindness for the day, I decided to stop by this store to inquire about its mission and to ask whether it needs help with anything -- I figured that I and they only had something to gain from this inquiry. I learned that the project helps strengthen Tibet's spiritual heritage by donating sacred items to institutions and individuals in the Himalayan region, and I was given the opportunity to serve by stacking and folding large prayer flags in preparation for sewing. Though I crave opportunities to serve people directly in person, this task was a good meditation for me on impersonal service removed from a direct, personal payoff. I became aware of the benefit of what I was doing, i.e. that the prayer flags I helped prepare were to be used at a 1,000-acre Buddhist community in Sonoma County, called Odiyan. Going forward, I sense that a blend of direct, personal service combined with impersonal service in line with my natural abilities is a realistic mix that will suit me at this point in my development. I can hardly wait for these service opportunities to manifest more frequently!
