Another day with my preK students and as usual, much learning. Most of these students are going through some transition or stress at home so each day can be challenging. So many emotions in their little bodies - they get angry and act out but mostly it is coming from a sadness and deep need for consistency, love and safety. I'm a teaching artist who works with music, movement and story. We dance, sing and create stories together - we laugh and we breathe deeply. Today at the end of one of my classes, one little girl who always seems to be sadder than a 4 year old should be was hiding in the corner. It's become a bit of a ritual. After the other students go, I will crouch down near her and ask if she wants a hug, usually she will nod, come out from her corner, give me the longest hug and smile before heading off to her other classroom. Today, one of the other little girls, younger and half her size who has her own troubles, came up and with her little finger gently tapped the arm of the little girl in the corner and said kindly, "come on, it's time to go" and, she took her hand. Then, together, holding hands, they walked out. Such simple caring, such simple kindness.
