Time Out of Joint, Global Shakespeare in Prison

Rehabilitation through the Arts brought a screening of three films based on Shakespearean works to an upstate New York prison with powerful results. The timeless themes of Shakespeare's writings, themes such as what it means to be a man, to be human, to live in a society with many ills which also provides possibilities for growth and transformation, are discussed after the films are viewed by the residents of the prison. The programs helps incarcerated individuals to reclaim and sustain their humanity. In a place where, as one participant says, you learn "to appreciate time when all you have is time," Shakespeare's works come alive as they spark hope and inspiration.

To Love Is to Be Brave

When it comes to love, what does that really look like in relationships? Is it roses on Valentines Day, walks in the park or uncomplicated conversations that seem to have no conflict? Not for Kelly Corrigan, author and podcaster. She has experienced that love and family life often require extraordinary bravery, from navigating the daily challenges to surviving the unexpected crises. She has learned that love takes bravery – the bravery not to take action when a person just needs you to listen or can do it for themselves, not to leave when their pain hurts you to the core to stay, and to lean back and let go when you know a person is ready to figure things out on their own. In this TED talk, she offers more profound wisdom to help you focus in on what matters most.

Rizoo

Azadeh Navai’s short film follows a rebellious girl in Iran who asks questions about when and why she needs to wear a hijab. This dramatization of a little girl’s questions shows her desire to be free -- to make an innocent choice for herself that goes against societal rules. We can wonder about our own resistance to societal rules that don’t make sense to us. One aspect of freedom means being able to act without fear of retaliation or threats to our own safety. In Western society we may ask why must some men wear a tie to work? Why do women feel compelled to color or straighten their hair? Why do many people feel obliged to follow unjust or nonsensical rules they don’t agree with? Many of these questions are bravely and symbolically confronted by a little girl who takes her photo as she likes to see herself and challenges us to consider how we might be free enough to choose our own way as well.

"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe." - John Muir. When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in the United States after being absent for nearly 70 years, the most remarkable "trophic cascade" occurred. What is a trophic cascade and how exactly do wolves change rivers? British environmental journalist George Monbiot explains in this video remix by Sustainable Man.

How to Age Gracefully

What would you say to your seven-year-old self? Play more? Don’t yell so loud? How about ‘stay weird’… as one nine year old puts it. As we move through our lives, our many experiences, mistakes and accomplishments shape how we live in the world. Hindsight is an amazing thing, and the ability to look back and consider what we could have done is a bitter-sweet feeling, as there’s no reliving the past. We can, however, shape our future. As part of CBC Radio One’s farewell video from WireTap, people from all walks of life offer their sage advice to their younger selves. This light hearted, touching and insightful video is all about hindsight. ‘Dear 53 year old, it’s never too late to try something new’. ‘Dear 85 year old, indulge your sweet tooth.’ Want to know what advice a 93 year old would give? Take a look.
