I found myself wondering about the concept of value. I believe in American society we value work when it meets certain conditions. The concept of essential workers has certainly brought my attention to the inadequacy of that idea. People who provide profound benefit to the society do not earn comparably. Why does a grocery store worker earn minimum wage while investment banker earns a six or seven figure salary?
I've been reading about the origins of whiteness and exceptionalism both for white people and Americans. I believe these ideas of value in compensation are tied up with those.
