Loved this story! Also was thinking about how when people answer the question affirmatively about really wanting to know why you are doing this, they're ready for one more step of understanding. Your offer of the scarf is skipping that step and maybe a few more. Most of us are in our heads much of the time, so I wonder what this experience would have been like to have come up with a verbal explanation that paves a few more steps from head to heart.
