Yes, over use of alcohol is often, I believe, just a way to numb to the sadness, or lack, a way to pass through the day without having to think too much about one's situation - history, presence or future. Perhaps this non-material kindness offered a moment of clarity, a memory of a mother's touch, a child's love, a time where home wasn't on the streets but one that contained laughter and a heart fire.
