At Karma Kitchen DC yesterday, a few of us got to help spruce up the ambiance with some sidewalk chalk art outside the restaurant! In the process, I was reminded of how making inspiring quotes visible, or just doing an act of kindness helps to break the ice to bring out the "giver" in each of us.
While chalking out the quote, "An act of kindness, no matter how small, is never wasted," a man walked by, pointed at the quote, and called out, "That's a good point!" It made me smile and recall an Awakin Call we had with Adam Grant-- he said that while most of us are "givers," we often don't show it because we don't feel like we have permission to reveal that side in most public settings. But when a few people or a space emerges that breaks the ice for our inherent generosity to emerge, the "giver" in each of us can "comes out of the closet". Was super sweet to experience that on a Sunday morning sidewalk of DC!
Also, speaking of Awakin Calls-- we were graced with the presence of another former guest speaker, Kristin Pedemonti, who shared beautiful stories of kindness as Nimo shared a few songs, and Arathi, Joel, Krishna, Alyssa, and a bunch of KK volunteers totally poured their love and focus into plating food, seating and serving guests, designing the space just right, and all the physical and metaphorically intensive ins and outs to making the day a continual stream of small acts of great love!
