[Every week or so, we have started sending out a summary of tidbits from across the ecosystem. They are also archived here.]
This week in Australia, Rev. Heng Sure is giving a college talk titled: “Radical Generosity: Basis of the Spiritual Path” He’ll be speaking about ServiceSpace and has invited to Trishna to Skype in. :)
Summer internship applications are about to close -- and you know Dunga is getting ready! Meanwhile, Silicon Valley billionaires have started “Alt School” to provide “intensely personal and intensely offline” education in a “micro school” context with “slow implementation” process. #Hmmmmm :)
On that note, while Birju will remind us that good ladders are always interns for life, rest of world is getting there in a convoluted way. Lot of tech interns make more than average US salary. NYT book review on how Harvard reshaped capitalism.
Nicole tells that the Pope has now given a Ted Talk! :) He called for a "revolution of tenderness."
Very tenderly, in fact, Jacob Needleman anchored a recent ServiceSpace circle on ethics. Here’s a story from when he was 9 years old, looking up at the stars: Finding God
You know about heart pins. (And Mike Tyson too!) Sonya requested 18 of them to share with prisoners who were moved by it. Bonus: Sri M in Switzerland doing a mic-check and looking for his heart. :)
Anne and Pragalbha became “giggle buddies” at one yoga class. They’ve been friends since. And this week, Anne brought her to an Awakin Circle. Here’s a blog post she later wrote: Home with No Walls
DailyGood last week attracted various spirited comments: Hello Hijab (BTW, did you know that 70,823 subscribers get the Weekly DG digest? You, too, can subscribe here. :))
Here’s some news that hasn’t yet made it to DG -- in Australia, a pay-what-you-can grocery store.
Bombay held a 1-day Moved by Love retreat, at Rahul’s senior center. Labor of love, all around. Just to give one example, Rupali drew this Buddha painting just for this circle. Here’s a note from one of the participants:
“It is gatherings like these that open up my heart even more, the vibrations come knocking to clear away the blocks. It is difficult to articulate, as always. I was able to feel so much happening within. Streams of metta, gentle currents of togetherness and joy ... What a blessing it is to be held in such a space, truly! Simply in gratitude for whatever that is that brings out this sensitivity and this gentleness.. The vibes of the retreat and of the space are still so strongly within. Even as I type, I can sense it so strongly and my only response to it is silence and gratitude.”
What makes someone donate a kidney to a stranger? WaPo on Extraordinary Altruists. “Researchers concluded that the altruists simply don't value strangers less than they value people they are close to. ‘They don’t tend to view a stranger or even an acquaintance as any less deserving of resources.’”
We champion the merits of anonymous kindness. But anonymity has a dark side too. More than 100 thousand people disappear annually: Evaporated People
Should a chimp have personhood rights? It depends on … how you interpret one word.
Anne and Rajesh are not just screening the story of “hurt children and their animal helpers” but in between, they just interviewed a wonderful Japanese professor at Stanford who speaks about heartfulness!
Elizabeth tells us that last week’s crew at KK served 148 guests! Lots of buzzing activity at our community table too. “Just fills you with hope,” Richard said without being able to pinpoint a reason why. Maybe it was the desserts that came out with extra heart cut-outs on them!
KK has always been all volunteer run, but apparently, many protests these days are filled with paid staffers. WaPo argues that it doesn’t matter, and wonders if Rosa Parks was also a paid protestor. On the flip side, Michael Sandel warns us why we shouldn’t release our civic lives to market forces.
Incidentally, Lawrence has launched Karma Kitchen Valencia (Southern California) last week. Word on the street is that they decided to serve breakfast for dinner -- but we’re waiting for pancake pictures to confirm the rumor. :)
We have a no-fundraising principle. Ever wonder what a US president thinks about fundraising? An excerpt from Obama’s second book.
Otto Scharmer and Nipun now have a history of recorded conversations at diners. :)
How confident is the Dalai Lama that he’ll remember generosity at the moment of death? Quite sure, but not 100% sure. Watch Mickey Lemle’s clip trailer at 3:13. (And that likely implies that all of us have to plenty of generosity left to practice.)
You’ve heard how we live in a post-truth, fake news era. 33% of millennials don't believe in truth -- that's actually true. Maybe. :) Well, Wikipedia founder wants to change that with his new project: WikiTribune
One of the turning points in Chandni’s life came via a conversation with the anchor behind Maitri Tunes. But if you want an hour of relaxing music, she will point you to this zen music. (And yes, you can now stream music to your dining table through your “smart” salt shaker.)
In Spain, David Leal Garcia wrote a sweet blog post saying, "In my 29th year of existence, this circle is the third personal growth revolution. First was stumbling into Mic Carrera's work as a teenager, second was my cousin Matilde Santos introducing me to Psych-K. And third has been the Gandhi 3.0 Laddership retreat, this Laddership Circle and ServiceSpace."
Here’s a random citing: Reminder to All Activists, video featuring Kyle Alan Cease, Tom Shadyac, Charles Eisenstein, Kosta Stoyanoff and Nipun.
Nikki also dropped in a note: "I'm guessing you're clued in to Netflix's unusual gem of media called The Kindness Diaries? Alas, someone realized that kindness sells."
Speaking of videos, Nimo’s graduation-song video has just come out! And psssst, you know how we like to leak solid scoop to all 18 readers of this weekly digest. Here is Nimo’s next viral video: Ode to Women (When Ferose first saw the video, he requested Ode to Men next time, before talking about his special wife.)
In a series of local Berkeley circles, Healing + T was the most recent. Lots of inspiring stories -- like Lesson from a Patient, what Working at Michael's Art Store taught me about medicine, the one time when my Uncle Didn't Ask for Morphine, and how Pregnancy Taught Me To Be a Doctor. Thank you, Anne Marie, Kozo, Sri, and Thu -- and many others behind the scenes.
This just in from Gabrielle: “After subscribing to DailyGood in January 2016, I was inspired to start my own email group, and use the positive articles/quotes I found on the DailyGood website as a basis for my messages. after a year and a half of subscribing to various mediums, becoming a part of the ServiceSpace team only felt natural -- because I want to be able to give just as much as I receive from ServiceSpace platforms.”
