Quote of the Week

"To see a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour." -- William Blake

Little Women (movie)

This week get together with children (10 and up) to watch the movie 'Little Women'. Set in Concord, Masachusetts during the 19th century, this movie explores the story of March sisters (Meg, Beth, Jo and Amy) -- each attuned to their own creative expressions and growing-up processes -- with their mother (Marmee) as an embodiment of generosity and "do it for someone else" spirit.

"The March household teaches many lessons about what it means to be a loving family. We see how they savor being together [...] We watch as they make their home a place of acceptance and welcome. And we learn that family life is a place of play and healing. Notice how they always seem to laugh in the presence of trouble and disagreement...." -- Spirituality & Practice

We hope you enjoy this exploration of sisterhood, love and giving.  [Read Article]

Title: The Cosmobiography of Sun Ra
Author-Illustrator: Chris Raschka
Ages: 6-9 years

"Jazz musician Sun Ra (1914–1993) always said that he came from Saturn. Being from another planet, he was naturally intrigued by everything earthly — especially music, because music is the one thing on Earth most like the stars. Earthlings themselves confused Sun Ra, the way they sorted themselves by color and fought wars against one another. So he made music. And he traveled with other musicians and singers, calling themselves the Sun Ra Arkestra, playing, singing, and dancing for people all over the planet. Because music, he said, is what holds us all together...." -- Publishers

Be The Change

Gather with children in a circle and reflect on what you have come to understand about the values, practices and tools that hold us all together -- even as the circumstances around you shift. What would be some such ideas that guide you? Are there examples of values you held as a family, class, team or with friends? How have your unique capacities, and the individual song that lives in each of us, featured in these settings? This exercise is suited for ages 11 and up. Seek inspiration from the stories shared above.
